Snap is making a second, more practical case for Specs, its forthcoming augmented-reality glasses. The company’s latest updates move the pitch beyond novelty AR experiences toward AI-assisted productivity, enterprise deployment and connected services.

That is a necessary repositioning for a standalone device priced at $2,195 to $2,200, depending on the cited listing. Specs are expected to ship this fall, following an October pop-up in Los Angeles.

What changed

The central product addition is Specs Intelligence, which Snap describes as an “anticipatory AI” system. It is intended to build context from the apps and tools a user elects to connect, including on iPhones and Macs, and use that context to support current priorities and longer-running projects.

The description makes Specs Intelligence sound less like a glasses-exclusive feature than a cross-device AI productivity layer. That matters: a useful software service could give Snap a reason to remain in a user’s workflow even when the glasses are not being worn.

Snap also introduced Specs for Enterprise, with promised mobile-device management, security controls and deployment tooling. The company cited partnerships with Amazon, Salesforce and Nvidia, among others, and demonstrated a technician using the glasses while repairing hardware.

On the consumer side, Snap added HBO Max and Spotify connectivity. It also announced a cellular-connected charging case through Verizon, priced at $10 a month for Verizon customers and $20 for others.

Why the enterprise angle matters

Enterprise is the more credible early market for expensive AR hardware. Organizations can assess a device against measurable outcomes: faster repairs, remote guidance, lower training time or better access to contextual information in the field. They can also buy and manage equipment centrally, rather than ask consumers to justify a premium purchase personally.

But the enterprise announcement is still a go-to-market framework, not proof of demand. The sources provide few details on production deployments, specific workflow integrations or customer outcomes. For IT leaders, those omissions are consequential. Management controls are table stakes; the procurement case depends on reliability, integration depth, security review and a clearly defined task where a face-worn display is better than a phone, tablet or laptop.

The design also creates a product trade-off. Specs houses its computing hardware in the glasses rather than relying on a phone, external compute unit or battery. That supports an untethered experience, but contributes to a conspicuous form factor.

The hardware is ambitious, but readiness is the question

A hands-on review found meaningful technical promise. Specs supports displays in both lenses, hand tracking and shared AR interactions; a multiplayer dominoes experience, for example, showed the appeal of people viewing and manipulating the same digital objects in a physical setting.

Yet the review also identified operational friction: gesture controls could be finicky, AR elements were harder to see in sunlight, and the 51-degree field of view meant digital objects could fall out of view. The on-device AI assistant was reported as slow and inconsistent in limited testing.

These are not minor usability issues for a device Snap is positioning as a computer. In field work, missed gestures, slow responses and poor outdoor visibility can turn a promised efficiency gain into support overhead.

What to watch next

The important test is whether Snap can turn its named partnerships into repeatable deployments with defined workflows. Watch for details on device-management capabilities, security architecture, developer tooling, application integrations and customer evidence after launch.

Snap is also entering a broader race involving Meta, Google, Apple and potentially OpenAI. Its opportunity is to establish the value of full AR displays and shared spatial experiences before rivals arrive. Its challenge is more immediate: prove that the software and enterprise stack can compensate for the device’s price, physical presence and current usability constraints.
